0:00 Word Count Barely Matters for AI Search
Hey, I’m Jeremy Ashburn with PushLeads, and I help businesses get more leads without struggle and frustration. And there’s a lot of frustration out there, right? Because we’re all trying to figure out how do you show up for AI. That’s been sort of the lifelong question or feels like a lifelong question. That’s been the question I’ve been asking myself. And among that question, I’ve been also asking other questions like, "How long should content actually be to get AI’s attention?" So the simple answer is the word count really doesn’t matter any longer. What actually drives I– AI citations is how you structure your content, how often you update it, and whatever– if each section delivers a clear answer in the first forty to sixty words, right? So that’s kind of the short answer. Let’s get into it, though.

0:46 Word Count Correlation Is Nearly Zero
So word count correlation is actually nearly zero and from a whole bunch of studies that I’ve gone through, and they basically found here that, um, in some cases, short content won out, in some cases long-term content. And so if you’re focused on trying to crank out five thousand word articles and you’re not following certain guidelines, then you are trying to solve the wrong problem. It’s not just about content. And the data re– reveals a counterintuitive truth. Longer doesn’t actually mean better in the AI search area. In fact, pages in positions, uh, four through ten averaged sixteen hundred words, more than the top-cited pages. So it really is not about quantity, it’s about quality, and I’ve written other and done other LinkedIn videos about that. And the study found– um, this research found that this study actually varies a lot between the platforms.

This is part of our AI search visibility guide.

1:41 Preferred Length Varies by AI Platform
So Ga-Google AI reviews likes around eleven hundred words or so. ChatGPT likes five– uh, seventy-five hundred words. Of course, is ChatGPT gonna be around after twenty twenty-eight? I mean, they’re spending billions of dollars, and they have to go IPO or get a huge investor because eventually they’re gonna be kaput ’cause they’re spending a lot of money. But nonetheless, let’s hopefully they, they don’t go kaput. I really like the platform for certain things, but not for writing. I’m a fan of Claude for writing. But anyway, moving on. Perplexity favors twelve hundred to tw-two thousand words, and then Claude does like also long writing. Uh, Claude prefers thirty-five hundred to five thousand words. So the reality is it totally varies by platform. And the section structure is actually more important than the total

2:31 Section Structure Beats Total Length
length. So the winning formula– So SE Ranking Research found, found that pages that had a hundred and twenty to a hundred and eighty words between H2 and H3 headings received seventy percent more ChatGPT citations than pages with thin content. So like a fifteen hundred word long article with ten well-structured sections outperforms a four thousand word article with walls of text and no headers. So "Content that answers questions directly and comprehensively will always outperform keyword-stuffed alternatives," is what John Mueller said. So really focus on your structure or have your AI, if you have AI writing content, have that focus on the structure. And Google’s hidden grounding budget.

3:14 Google’s Two Thousand Word Grounding Budget
So Google doesn’t crawl all of your content or all your client’s content if you’re an SEO person. They actually have a two thousand word grounding limit. And what that basically means is that Dan Petrovic’s December twenty twen-twenty five research found that Google has a grounding budget of around two thousand words per query. So it pulls the top five hundred words from the top side of page and distributes that. So basically, if you have content that’s under a thousand words, then you have that coverage is achieved. If it’s over, over three thousand words, then m-maybe fifteen percent of that is actually achieved. And so the average word is around fifteen point five. So reality is Google has a two thousand word limit there. So your best practice here is the answer capsule format.

4:03 Answer Capsule Format Explained
So the top-cited pages are using an answer capsule or TLDR or key takeaways, and they’re basically putting a self-contained answer right after the H2 heading and support and before the supporting details. So you’ve been on, you know, a website before, and you’ve seen key takeaways, and you’ve seen the answer first. That’s because people are paying attention. People are putting AI first. So this format works really well because AIs can scan for direct extractable answers in these key takeaways. So this means that you should not bury your answer in the third paragraph. The AI will skip you entirely or skip your client entirely. Thanks for playing. So, um, so let’s think of an HVAC company, for example. How much does an AC repair cost? If you have an answer capsule or TLO– TLDR or key takeaways, and you have most AC repairs cost between fifteen– a hundred fifty to six hundred or whatever the price is, depending on the part that failed, you’re answering the question right away, and that’s super critical. And then ultimately, content freshness is the ultimate driver, right?

5:06 Content Freshness Drives AI Citations
So what we basically found here is that if you are kinda doing updates every three months, then you get an average of six citations. Uh, if you’re doing, um, updating content every thirty days, then you’re getting seventy-six percent of citations. And so fifty percent of the top-cited content was less than thirteen weeks old. Yeah, let’s say you’re an SEO person and you’re working with a client who doesn’t wanna blog, who doesn’t wanna publish inner hidden pages, go ahead and let that client go. They don’t understand. Unless you can get them to com– to understand and see this video or any other content out there that talks about how important content freshness is. And if you have a client that’s micromanaging you, probably not a good client. You need to be able to, uh, get approval and publish content and not have a lot of restraint. Unless you’re talking about lawyers or insurance or banking, there needs to be guidelines you’re following there, but you still need to produce content. So content freshness beats content length every time. But you can revisit the top pages quarterly to refresh the stats, update pricing, and add– expand the content, et cetera. Content freshness is more important than anything else.

6:13 Recommended Length by Content Type
So practical recommendations by content type. If you have a service page, then maybe five hundred to a thousand words with five to eight FAQ sections using FAQ, FAQ schema, um, and then if you have a blog post We’re looking at fifteen hundred to twenty-five hundred words broken into a hundred and twenty to a hundred and eighty word sections. Lead each an- section with an answer capsule and include one statistic per, per, per section, or have your AI include one stat every a hundred and fifty to two hundred words. Service area pages are four hundred to eight hundred words with unique local content, and then comprehensive guides are three thousand to five thousand words with comparison tables, origin data, quotes, et cetera.

6:54 Citation Hierarchy What Actually Ranks
So the citation hierarchy, what is really important here? The hierarchy, what drives AI citations is clear. Topical relevance comes first. So how important is this topic? Other topics, does it relate to what your client has or what your, your business has? Then freshness, then domain authority, then structure. Word count comes last. But formatting that works is FAQ sections with schema, comparison tables, list formatting, and statistics every a hundred and fifty to two hundred words. So stop obsessing over word count if you’re an old school SEO person, and you’re like, "Hey, I just need ten thousand words." Write as exactly as many words as your topic needs. Quality and com- completeness matter infinitely more than hitting a certain five thousand or two thousand word length. Put the answer first in every question. Use answer capsules every, every… which are normally twenty-five words along immediately after headings. Keep your content fresh. Update content quarterly at a minimum, and then structure beats everything. Sections of a hundred and eighty words or so with clear headings do so much better. All right. I’m Jeremy Ashburn with PushLeads. Thank you so much and talk to you s-

Word count doesn’t matter for AI search; structure, updates, and clear answers in 40-60 words per section drive citations.
