0:00 Study Setup and What Was Tracked
In this video, PushLeads breaks down a real six week tracking study to answer one question every home service business owner is starting to ask. Do YouTube videos actually show up inside AI search answers? The short answer is yes, but only when a few specific things are in place. We are going to walk through every finding starting from scratch so you know exactly what to do. I’m Jeremy with PushLeads. My entire focus is making the phone ring for small businesses. I founded PushLeads in 2012 after years of proving this on my own projects first. What we’re doing in this video is what our own data says about do YouTube videos get cited in AI search. What our channel showed before we get into results.
0:44 How the Six-Week Study Worked
Here is what the study actually looked like every week PushLeads ran 58 buyer questions through four AI platforms, Google AI overviews, Google AI mode, Perplexity, and ChatGPT. When an AI answer linked directly to one of our YouTube videos, we counted that as a citation. Views and impressions were ignored completely. The weekly counts in this video starts September 27th on October 19th. We added 14 extra test questions tied to on camera explainer videos to get a controlled comparison. A few terms come up throughout this study, so let us define them now. An AI citation is when an AI generated answer links to a YouTube video as a source, not a view, a direct link inside the answer. A slideshow video is a deck with narration and no one on camera. A timestamp URL is a video link with a time code like t equals 166 pointing to the exact second the answer appears. And co -citation is when an AI answer links to both a written page and a video from the same website in the same response. Keep those four terms in mind.
This is part of our AI search visibility guide.
1:54 Citation Growth Week by Week
Here is the headline result. Citations grew every single week without exception. One -sided video on September 27th, two on October 4th, three on October 11th, four on October 18th, a small channel, no advertising, no viral moment, just steady growth tied directly to the factors we are about to cover. The upward line mattered because it showed the system was working, not just getting lucky once.
2:19 Google AI vs ChatGPT Platform Split
Now, the most important platform split in this entire study across our client fleet in October, Google AI answers cited YouTube in 49% of 5,819 answers, chat GBT cited YouTube in just 1% of 932 answers. That is a 48 point gap. These are not two versions of the same opportunity that they are completely different games. YouTube is a Google AI play. If your buyers primarily use chat GBT to find contractors, written content on your site will serve you far better than video.
2:52 Slideshow vs On-Camera Video Results
A question that comes up immediately is whether you need to be on camera to compete. The data says no. Between October 4th and October 18th, six different slideshow videos, deck plus narration, no animated in AI answers. Then on October 19th, our on camera explainer videos were cited in 10 of 27 answers across Google’s platforms. Both formats worked. Format was not the deciding factor. What separated cited videos from ignored ones had nothing to do with how the video looked or how many subscribers the channel had. Let us look at the slideshow results specifically because they matter most for business owners who are not comfortable on camera. Fire damage restoration cost was cited three times across the tracking window. Mold remediation cost was cited twice. And the time from published to first citation for those slideshow videos ran 11 to 20 days in our weekly tracking. That range is important. It means a video needs time to be indexed and evaluated before it shows up in AI answers. Do not judge a video at two weeks.
3:58 Four Factors That Decided Citations
So what actually decided whether a video got cited? We looked at every video that was cited and everyone that was not. Four factors showed up again and again in the cited group. First, the title was phrased as one complete question, a real buyer types. Second, there was low competition on that topic. Existing YouTube results were thin. Third, a matching written page existed on the same website. And fourth, accurate captions were uploaded. Videos with all four got cited, videos missing one or more mostly did not. That is a pattern, not a guarantee.
4:34 Co-Citation Pattern Explained
The written page factor surprises the most in seven of 10 answers where our video was cited. The matching PushLeads.com page was cited in the same answer. That is a co -citation pattern. And it did not happen by accident. AI systems appear to use the written page to verify the video’s answer and use the video to enrich the response with media. Together, they outperform either one published alone. A video with no written companion page had the weakest results in our tracking.
5:04 Why Two Weeks Is Too Early to Judge
Here’s a mistake that almost cost us the whole study. Our September 20th internal review found zero citations after two weeks and 46 published videos. If we had stopped there, we would have concluded that YouTube videos do not get cited in AI search and moved on entirely. That conclusion would have been completely wrong. The exact same videos that showed nothing at two weeks started appearing in AI citations three to four weeks after publish. Patience is not optional. It is the most important lesson in the data.
5:37 Captions and Timestamp URLs Matter
Let us go deeper on captions because this one is easy to underestimate. When Google cited our videos, the links carried timestamps, for example, to equals 166, pointing to the exact second the video answered the query. Google is reading the caption text to find where inside the video the answer lives. It is not just matching your title to the search. That means auto captions with errors are actively hiding your answer, uploading a clean transcript or correcting the auto generated file before you publish protects every other factor you have already put in place.
6:14 Best Topic Categories for Home Services
What topics should a home service business actually target? Three categories work best in our data. Cost questions, buyers asking how much something costs have clear intent and are often close to calling someone. Process and why questions when someone asks why their restoration company is not showing up on Google, they are trying to understand a situation before they commit. In comparison questions where the current YouTube results are thin, fire damage and mold remediation costs were cited five times combined. Thin competition on the topic matters as much as the topic itself citations were not the only return from the system. Channel traffic from October 13th to 18th showed long form videos getting about 515 views per day from YouTube search. But here’s the part that feeds back into the system. Viewers who arrived from our own written pages watched two minutes and 28 seconds on average up from two minutes and five seconds the week before, visitors from your own written pages watched longer and that stronger watch time signal goes back to YouTube and reinforces both citation rate and channel visibility at the same time.
7:24 Six-Step Repeatable Process
Here are the six steps that put everything together into a repeatable process. One title each video is one exact buyer question, not a topic or brand phrase. Two search that question on YouTube before you record anything. If strong videos already own it, pick a different question. Three publish a written page on the same question and embed the video on it. Four upload accurate captions before the video goes live. Five wait three to four weeks before you judge any individual video. Six do not count on YouTube to help in ChatGPT. 1% of 932 answers is not a strategy. 49% of 5,819 is.
