0:00 GPT Model Lineage Overview
In June 2018, OpenAI published a research paper that most business owners have never read, but every AI tool you use today traces directly back to it. This is the complete story of the GPT model lineage, from 117 million parameters to agentic workflows, and what every milestone means for how you compete right now. In case we’re new to each other, I’m Jeremy Ashburn, PushLeads as my agency, and local business owners and marketers are who we serve. Everything I’m about to show you comes from 20 years of doing, not theorizing. What we’re doing in this video is GPT model lineage.

0:39 GPT-1 the Foundation Model
GPT -1 came out in June 2018. 117 million parameters trained on roughly 7 ,000 unpublished books from the book corpus data set. OpenAI released it to prove a single pre -trained language model could be fine -tuned for multiple tasks without rebuilding from scratch each time. Before this, every NLP system was task -specific and brittle. After this, the entire field pivoted toward general purpose pre -training as the default approach. Here is what the benchmark results actually showed. After fine -tuning, GPT -1 beat task -specific models on 9 out of 12 evaluated NLP benchmarks. The two -stage process had introduced pre -trained on a massive corpus, then fine -tuned with a small label data set for each downstream task became the standard workflow for nearly every large language model built afterward. You trained one foundation and redirected it. That efficiency gain is why the approach scaled so quickly. GPT -1 and GPT -2 together locked in three architectural rules that every successor

still follows. First, the transformer backbone using multi -head self -attention. Second, auto -regressive generation, predicting one token at a time, left to right. Third, the pre -trained then fine -tuned workflow. GPT -2 released in February 2019 with 1 .5 billion parameters added something unexpected. Its outputs were realistic enough that OpenAI staged the release and phases over misuse concerns. That caution foreshadowed every content authenticity debate that followed.

2:20 GPT-3 First Commercial API
GPT -3 released in May 2020 with 175 billion parameters changed who could use AI. OpenAI launched it behind an API, no training infrastructure, no machine learning team required. You sent a prompt and received a response for small business owners that meant usable AI tools arrived without any specialized configuration. You describe what you wanted in plain language and the model produced it. The scale jump from GPT -1 to GPT -3 happened in roughly 24 months, 117 million parameters to 175 billion and approximately 1500 times larger. The first commercial API launched in 2020 and with it, the conversation about AI as a business tool became real for the first time outside of research labs. GPT -3 was extraordinarily capable and immediately revealed a serious problem. The model would confidently state false information, produce biased outputs and comply with harmful instructions because it was optimized to predict likely text, not accurate or safe text. It had no built -in sense of what a human actually wanted for businesses trying to use it in customer -facing applications. That tension between fluency and accuracy was apparent from day one. Something had to change.

3:43 InstructGPT and RLHF Alignment
That something was reinforcement learning from human feedback, RLHF, human raters scored model outputs and those scores were used to steer the model toward responses people actually preferred. The result was instruct GPT released in early 2022. Human evaluators preferred instruct GPT outputs over GPT -3 outputs 85 % of the time, even though instruct GPT used far fewer parameters. Smaller, better aligned models outperformed larger unaligned ones on the tasks users actually cared about. RLHF worked in a sequence. Human raters evaluated thousands of model responses. A separate reward model learned to predict what raters would prefer. The language model was then fine -tuned using that reward signal. Instruct GPT shipped in early 2022 following instructions reliably and refusing harmful requests far more consistently.

4:38 ChatGPT Reaches One Million Users
Then in November 2022, ChatGPT applied RLHF to a GPT 3 .5 base model, packaged it as a conversational interface and reached 1 million users in five days. Every AI writing and customer service tool you use today behaves the way it does because of this sequence. GPT -4 arrived in March 2023 and widened the gap

5:03 GPT-4 Multimodal Reasoning Leap
in reasoning dramatically. On the uniform bar exam, GPT -4 scored in the 90th percentile, GPT -3 .5 scored in the 10th percentile on the same exam. That is an 80 -point gap. GPT -4 also scored highly on the LSAT, GRE, and several AP exams. It introduced multimodal input images alongside text, opening up document analysis, visual product descriptions, and image -based support workflows that simply were not possible before. GPT -4 .0, released in May 2024, unified text, image, and audio processing into a single model faster and cheaper per query than the base GPT -4. Real -time voice interaction with natural conversational pacing became practical for the first time in the mainstream GPT line. For most marketing teams and local businesses, GPT -4 .0 became the operational default, the model that handles content drafts, summaries, customer responses, and analysis day -to -day.

6:08 O1 and O3 Inference Time Reasoning
In September 2024, OpenAI released O1, the most significant architectural departure since RLHF. Instead of predicting the next token quickly, O1 was trained to reason step -by -step before producing a final answer, spending more compute at inference time when the question warranted it. OpenAI called this thinking, the O3 series, announced in December 2024, pushed further, approaching expert human performance on competitive programming and graduate -level science benchmarks. The decision between GPT -4 .0 and the O -series is not technical anymore. Routine tasks go to GPT -4 .0, high stakes, multi -step problems go to O -series. Here is the full lineage in one place,

6:49 Full GPT Lineage Timeline Summary
GPT -1, June 2018, 117 million parameters, pre -trained then fine -tuned, GPT -2, February 2019, 1 .5 billion, coherent long -form text, stage rollout, GPT -3, May 2020, 175 billion, few -shot learning, first commercial API, instruct GPT, early 2022, 1 .3 billion, RLHF, preferred 85 % of the time, ChatGPT, November 2022, conversational interface, 1 million users in five days, GPT -4, March 2023, multi -modal, 90th percentile, bar exam, GPT -4 .0, May 2024, unified modalities, faster and cheaper, 01, September 2024, inference time reasoning, 03, December 2024 onward, near expert reasoning, GPT -5, estimated 2026, egenic workflows.

8:04 GPT-5 Agentic Workflows Explained
GPT -5 is being designed around a fundamentally different interaction model. Rather than answering a single prompt, it is built to take sequences of actions across tools and platforms with less human supervision between steps. For a small business owner, that could mean AI that drafts, schedules, publishes, and reports on content without a separate prompt for each action. Sam Altman has described GPT -5 as a significant capability jump relative to GPT -4. Unified reasoning and conversation, reduced hallucinations, and egenic execution are the three pillars, and the entire arc from 117 million parameters to this moment covers less than eight years. The tools available in 2026 will be categorically more capable than what you use in 2023. That is not a prediction. It is what the lineage shows at every step. GPT -1 to GPT -3 was 1500 times more parameters in 24 months. GPT -3 to instruct GPT changed what alignment even meant. GPT -4 to GPT -4 -0 made multi -modal AI affordable.

9:14 Operational Advantage of Staying Current
Staying current with this progression is an operational advantage. Businesses still running on GPT -3 era tools are leaving real capability on the table right now. Knowing the GPT -model lineage helps you make better decisions about which tools to use and what to expect from them. But knowing the tools exist is different from knowing how to use them to grow your business. PushLeads works with local service companies, e -commerce businesses, and creative teams to match the right model to the right task and build it into a strategy that compounds over time.
