Maricielo Solis, the Founder of BLENDtw, conducted extensive research on the intricacies of SEO to elevate her platform catering to college students. BLENDtw is the premier community for Generation Z, offering college life, wellness, and culture coverage. Although it took over a year for her SEO efforts to gain momentum, Solis now runs a successful seven-figure company.

“I had invested all my savings and spent around $10,000 on hiring writers and improving the appearance of my publication,” she explains. “I couldn’t understand why we weren’t receiving the same level of engagement as we did four months prior with a specific story. I realized my approach was flawed due to my lack of understanding of the publishing industry. I realized that I had overlooked SEO entirely. To create content that ranks on Google, specific guidelines must be followed. I implemented this framework on my website, and it took off. Our readership went from 10,000 per month to 10,000 per day. Through affiliate marketing, our ad network revenue increased from $10,000 to $100,000 per month. Once we understood how to utilize it properly, the website’s success skyrocketed.”

Growing up in Peru, Solis had aspirations to work in media. After attending university in the United States, she applied for the NBC Page Program upon graduation. The Program is a rotational learning and development program for students seeking to enter the media industry. Solis worked as an assistant for Lester Holt on various programs, including the Today Show, SNL, and MSNBC’s Morning Joe. From NBC, she transitioned to CNN as a production assistant.

Over four years, Solis assisted in the production of CNN’s flagship morning program, New Day with Alisyn Camerota, while also providing support to the news teams of Anderson Cooper and Wolf Blitzer. During this time, she met a Columbia University Journalism faculty member at a Telemundo event, who invited her to speak to a group of students. This led to her regularly presenting to the group.

“Through these discussions,” Solis states, “I gained insight into two key areas. Firstly, Gen Z and young adults do not consume mainstream media in the traditional sense; they have a unique relationship with it. They often place more trust in content creators on platforms like YouTube over traditional news anchors. I recognized a mistrust and a feeling that their stories were not accurately represented in mainstream media. This inspired the creation of BLENDtw, which stands for “blend the world,” in 2017 as a grassroots project.”

Solis published the platform and gathered stories from around the world, covering various topics, such as gun control, violence in America, immigration, and LGBTQ issues. One of her first stories went viral, which allowed her to monetize it. This prompted her to leave CNN and focus on BLEND as a freelance writer.

Before truly learning how to optimize her site, she fell into the trap of thinking that one viral article would sustain her vision. Quickly realizing this was not the case, she worked odd jobs to pay her bills and keep the platform afloat while delving into the world of SEO.

Focus on Writing EAT Content – The priority of Google is to provide accurate information and address user queries, so we can see that EAT websites are valued. Because EAT content is rewarded on the algorithm, it includes clear expertise in the subject matter, primary research, unique photographs and videos, and so on. This kind of content includes primary research such as data, surveys, charts, case studies, and unique photographs and videos that add value to the reader.

Write content for people, not machines – The number one mistake made by new publishers is to include too many keywords in their articles. This can adversely affect your Google ranking, making it seem like you are posting junk messages. Instead of using the same keyword multiple times, vary your keywords.

In addition, AI tools aren’t of any use for composing content. The content could be of better quality and will lower your rankings. AI tools are excellent at demonstrating how to do something, but they need to demonstrate how to do it. Make certain that your content is of excellent quality with real-life examples. Experts will be of greater importance in 2017.
