Key Takeaways
Data tracked across 41 local businesses and 166 citation records shows that a contractor’s own website remains the dominant AI citation source, appearing in 38 of 39 cases. YouTube citations appeared in 23 of 39 businesses, accounting for roughly 15.5% of all citations. Yelp appeared in only 2 of 39. The practical implication is that video content, Reddit participation, and a well-structured website answer more AI queries than paid directory listings.
- Your own website was the single most cited domain for 38 out of 39 businesses tracked, making it the foundation of AI visibility.
- YouTube citations appeared for 23 of 39 businesses, roughly 15.5% of all recorded citations, far outpacing any paid directory.
- Reddit citations appeared for 14 of 39 businesses because AI engines use community forums to verify what real users think.
- Yelp received only 2 citations and Angi and Thumbtack each received 1 across the entire 39-business dataset.
- AI-generated answers now account for an estimated 45% of service-business search interactions, up from roughly 5% one year ago.
- Placing a direct answer within the first 100 words of any page increases the likelihood that Google’s AI will quote that page.
- Most local searches for service contractors still happen on Google, where AI answers appear at the top, not inside ChatGPT or Gemini directly.
What the Data From 41 Local Businesses Actually Shows About AI Citations
Across 39 service-based businesses tracked weekly, a contractor’s own website appeared as the primary AI citation source in 38 of those 39 cases, YouTube appeared in 23, Reddit in 14, Yelp in 2, and Angi and Thumbtack in 1 each, out of 166 total citation records spanning 115 distinct domains. The data was not collected through a survey or a published study. It came from live weekly tracking of which domains Google’s AI pulled from when answering questions in each client’s market, covering contractors, restoration companies, and vacation rental operators.
The headline finding is straightforward. The platforms that many service businesses pay monthly fees to maintain, primarily Yelp, Angi, and Thumbtack, contribute almost nothing to AI-generated answers. Meanwhile, a free YouTube channel with job-site videos contributed citations in more than half the businesses tracked. Reddit, another free platform, contributed in more than one-third. This does not mean paid directories have zero marketing value across the board, but the citation data makes it difficult to justify directory spend as an AI visibility strategy.
A concrete example from the dataset: one plumbing client held 33% of all AI citations in their market through their own website, while YouTube videos, not their own but a competitor’s, accounted for 26% of citations. That gap represents an opening. Businesses that begin posting their own YouTube content can capture citation share that currently belongs to someone else. Understanding how AI search works for local businesses is the first step toward closing that gap.

Why Yelp and Paid Directories Barely Register as AI Citation Sources
Yelp appeared in just 2 of 39 business citation profiles, and Angi and Thumbtack each appeared in 1, meaning that across 166 citation records, these three platforms combined for roughly 2.4% of all AI citations. The reason is structural, not arbitrary.
Does Yelp help with Google AI visibility for contractors?
Yelp contributes almost no direct citation weight to Google’s AI answers for service contractors, based on the 39-business dataset. Google’s AI is sourcing answers from domains it judges to have original, informational, and community-corroborated content. Yelp’s pages for a specific contractor contain mostly review text and category listings, not detailed answers to procedural or advisory questions like “how long does water damage restoration take” or “what causes a drain to back up.” AI systems are selecting for pages that answer questions, not pages that list ratings.
Is spending money on Angi or Thumbtack worth it for AI search?
Based on the citation data, Angi and Thumbtack each appeared once across the entire 39-business, 166-record dataset, which translates to citation rates below 1%. That does not mean these platforms never generate leads through their own internal search, but it does mean a contractor should not count directory spend as contributing to AI citation volume. A budget reallocated toward a YouTube content plan or toward expanding the FAQ and service page structure of the contractor’s own website would produce more measurable AI citation results based on the current data.
Why do AI engines skip review-focused directories?
AI engines like Google’s AI Overviews are attempting to triangulate factual accuracy by cross-referencing multiple independent sources. A Yelp page for a specific business repeats information the business itself has already stated, such as name, address, phone number, and service category. That content adds little triangulation value. Reddit posts and YouTube videos, by contrast, represent independent third-party signals where real people discuss real experiences or where a business demonstrates knowledge in a format different from its website. AI systems treat those as corroborating evidence, which is why they show up more often.
Why YouTube Outperforms Every Other Third-Party Platform in the Data
YouTube citations appeared for 23 of 39 businesses tracked, representing approximately 15.5% of all citations recorded, which made it the second most cited domain type after each business’s own website. No other third-party platform came within 10 percentage points of that figure.
Why does Google’s AI cite YouTube videos for local service questions?
Google owns YouTube, but ownership alone does not explain the citation rate. The more relevant factor is that YouTube videos, particularly those that answer specific procedural questions, provide a format Google’s AI can use to corroborate claims made on a contractor’s website. When a plumber’s site says “we clear main line blockages using hydro-jetting,” and a YouTube video from any creator shows and narrates the hydro-jetting process, Google’s AI treats those as independent signals pointing to the same factual answer. That triangulation is what drives the citation.
Do I need professional video equipment to get YouTube citations?
No. The citation data does not distinguish between professionally produced videos and phone-shot job-site footage. The relevant factors appear to be whether the video has a clear title that matches a search query, whether the description includes the trade and city, and whether the speaker answers a question out loud during the video. A contractor can film themselves walking through a restoration job and narrating why certain steps are taken, upload it with a descriptive title, and that video becomes eligible for AI citation. Production quality matters less than topical clarity and consistency of posting.
How many YouTube videos does a contractor need to see citation results?
The data collected does not include a minimum video count, but the pattern across the 23 businesses that received YouTube citations suggests that even a small library of topic-specific videos, covering common customer questions in a given trade and city, is enough to begin appearing. The key action is to start posting, answer real customer questions verbally in each video, and include the trade category and city name in the title and description of every upload. Frequency matters over perfection, and posting consistently over two to three months is more effective than producing one polished video per quarter.
How Reddit Became the Third Most Important AI Citation Source for Local Businesses
Reddit appeared in 14 of 39 business citation records, roughly 36% of the businesses tracked, making it the third most frequent citation source after company websites and YouTube. Reddit’s role in AI citations is distinct from its role as a consumer review platform.
Why does AI use Reddit as a source for local contractor questions?
Reddit communities represent aggregated user opinion expressed in natural language, which is exactly the kind of signal AI systems use to validate whether a claim is widely accepted or contested. When a homeowner asks in a city subreddit “does anyone know a reliable roofer in Asheville,” the responses from real community members carry independent credibility. Google’s AI treats those threads as evidence of what local residents actually think, separate from what a business’s own website says. That independence is the citation driver.
How should a contractor participate in Reddit without violating community rules?
Effective Reddit participation for AI citation purposes does not require advertising. Contractors should identify their city subreddit and the subreddits for their trade, monitor question threads related to their service category, and post genuinely useful answers without linking to their own website in every response. Answering questions like “how do I know if my water heater needs replacing” or “what should I expect during a mold remediation inspection” in the relevant subreddit establishes topical authority. Over time, those threads become citation candidates when AI answers related queries. Spam-style promotion gets removed by moderators and produces no citation value.
Is Reddit participation a long-term strategy or a one-time effort?
Reddit threads accumulate over time and remain indexed, which means a useful answer posted today can continue to generate AI citation value months later. However, subreddit activity from a single account that posts infrequently looks less authoritative to both community members and AI systems than an account that participates regularly. A realistic approach for a contractor is to check their city subreddit and one or two trade subreddits two to three times per week and answer any questions that fall within their expertise. That level of participation, sustained over several months, builds the kind of thread library that AI systems draw from.
How do I optimize my website for AI search and ChatGPT?
A contractor’s own website should contain the direct answer to any target question within the first 100 words of the relevant page, because AI systems extract and quote the opening sentences of pages when those sentences clearly answer the query. This single structural change, putting the answer first rather than building to it, is the most actionable website optimization for AI citation purposes.
What does “answer-first” content structure mean for a service page?
Answer-first structure means that the first one or two sentences of any service page or blog post state the answer to the most likely question a reader would have, before any background, company history, or feature list appears. For example, a drain cleaning page that opens with “Main line blockages in older homes typically take two to four hours to clear using hydro-jetting equipment, and most clogs can be resolved in a single visit” gives an AI system a quotable answer immediately. A page that opens with “Welcome to our plumbing department, where we pride ourselves on service” provides nothing quotable. The factual version gets cited. The promotional version does not.
Should I be optimizing for ChatGPT specifically or for Google’s AI?
For most service contractors, optimizing for Google’s AI Overviews is more practical than optimizing for ChatGPT specifically. The data from the 39-business tracking study reflects Google’s AI citation behavior because that is where local service queries actually happen. Ahrefs data cited in the study shows that 3,300 people per month are searching for ways to turn AI off in Google, which itself indicates that Google’s AI is the environment users are encountering, not standalone AI chatbot interfaces. While Gemini is estimated to hold around 9 to 10.6% of AI search market share depending on the measurement source, that figure shifts frequently and no single AI platform other than Google’s own is confirmed to drive local contractor leads at scale.
How does AI decide which website to quote when multiple sites cover the same topic?
AI systems appear to prioritize the site that states the answer most directly, that is cited or referenced from other independent sources like YouTube or Reddit, and that covers the topic with enough specificity to match the exact phrasing of the query. For a contractor, this means that a page specifically about “emergency water damage restoration in Asheville” with a direct answer in the opening paragraph, combined with a YouTube video covering the same topic and Reddit threads in the Asheville subreddit referencing water damage questions, creates a triangulated signal that pushes that business’s website to the top of AI citation candidates. Generalist pages that cover broad topics without city-specific detail perform worse than narrowly focused, locally relevant pages.
The Scale of the Shift From Traditional Search to AI-Generated Answers
AI-generated answers now account for an estimated 45% of service-business search interactions, compared to roughly 5% one year ago, based on the pattern observed across the 39 businesses tracked. That 40-percentage-point increase in one year represents the fastest documented shift in local search behavior this tracking effort has observed.
Is this shift in AI search usage permanent or likely to reverse?
The Ahrefs data point that 3,300 people per month search for ways to remove AI from Google results is informative here. Consumer preference aside, Google has continued to expand AI Overviews across more query types, and the infrastructure investment underlying these systems makes a full reversal unlikely in the near term. Contractors who wait for the trend to stabilize before acting are effectively conceding citation share to whoever in their market starts producing AI-compatible content first. By the time a competitor’s citations are established across YouTube, Reddit, and their own website, those positions are significantly harder to displace.
Do customers actually use AI to find contractors, or is it mostly passive exposure?
The distinction matters. Most consumers searching for “drain cleaning near me” or “roof repair Asheville” are not opening ChatGPT and typing the query. They are using Google as they always have, but the results page now frequently includes an AI-generated answer block at the top, drawn from the citation sources described in this data. The consumer did not choose to interact with AI. They simply asked Google a question and received an AI-synthesized answer before seeing organic listings. This is why the question of “which AI platform should I optimize for” is largely irrelevant for local contractors. Google is the AI delivery mechanism that matters, and the optimization strategy for it is the same as described: own website answer-first content, YouTube videos, Reddit participation.
What share of local searches still produce traditional organic results without AI?
The 39-business dataset does not include a precise breakdown of AI-versus-traditional query ratios, but the directional data suggests approximately 55% of relevant local queries still produce traditional organic results without an AI block, based on the inverse of the 45% AI interaction estimate. This means traditional SEO, ranking on page one for service-plus-city keywords, remains essential. Contractors should not abandon organic ranking strategies in favor of AI-only tactics. The most effective approach combines both: a website that ranks organically and that also structures answers to qualify for AI citation. Understanding the full scope of local SEO for home service contractors covers both dimensions.
The Four Actions That Drive AI Citation Volume for Service Contractors
Based on the 39-business dataset, four specific actions produce measurable AI citation results: posting videos to YouTube, participating in Reddit communities, structuring website pages to lead with direct answers, and reducing or eliminating spend on low-citation directories like Yelp, Angi, and Thumbtack in favor of redirecting that time and budget toward the first three.
How do I start a YouTube content plan if I have no video experience?
The entry point is simple. Film a job in progress using a phone, narrate what is happening and why, and post the video with a title that matches how a customer would phrase a question, for example “why is my basement flooding after rain in Asheville.” Include the trade category and city in the description. The video does not need to be edited. It does not need music or graphics. It needs a clear spoken answer to a real question and a descriptive title. That is enough to qualify for AI citation. Posting two to four videos per month over three months produces a library large enough for AI systems to recognize the channel as a topical authority in a specific trade and city.
What is the best way to structure a service page for AI visibility?
Each service page should open with a one to two sentence direct answer to the most common question about that service. Following that answer, the page should include specific details: typical timeframes, cost ranges where appropriate, what the process involves, and what the customer should expect. Each major question a customer might have should appear as its own subheading, with the answer directly below it. This mirrors the structure that AI systems scan when assembling a quoted answer. Pages that bury the answer in the fifth paragraph after three paragraphs of company background are consistently outperformed by pages that lead with factual, specific answers.
How much should I reallocate from directory spend to content production?
The citation data does not specify a dollar amount, but the logic is proportional. If a contractor is paying $300 per month for a Yelp advertising package that produced 2 AI citations across the entire 39-business dataset, and YouTube produced 23 citations at zero platform cost, the argument for keeping the Yelp budget is difficult to sustain on citation-effectiveness grounds alone. The practical reallocation would be to use any freed directory budget to cover the time cost of producing and uploading videos, whether that means a staff hour per week or a freelance editor for occasional polishing. Even at modest production investment, YouTube’s citation performance in this dataset dwarfs what paid directories returned.
Frequently Asked Questions
How was this citation data collected?
The data came from weekly AI citation tracking conducted across 39 service-based businesses, including contractors, restoration companies, and vacation rental operators. Researchers logged which domains Google’s AI pulled from when answering questions in each client’s market. The dataset covers 166 citation records across 115 distinct domains. This was not a survey or a third-party published study. It was first-party tracking data collected by monitoring live AI answer behavior over time, with results aggregated for the 39-business sample.
Does ChatGPT matter for local contractor visibility?
For most home service contractors, ChatGPT has minimal direct impact on lead generation compared to Google’s AI Overviews. Local consumers rarely open ChatGPT to search for contractors by city and trade. They use Google, which now displays AI-generated answers above traditional organic results. Gemini holds an estimated 9 to 10.6% AI search market share depending on the data source, but the primary AI delivery mechanism for local queries remains Google’s own AI system. Optimizing for Google’s citation behavior covers the vast majority of the opportunity.
Why does my own website show up as the top citation source?
Your website appeared as the top citation source for 38 of 39 businesses tracked because it contains the most complete, specific, and authoritative information about your services in your market. AI systems use it as a primary source and cross-reference it against independent sources like YouTube and Reddit to verify accuracy. Websites that lead with direct answers to common questions on each service page give AI systems clear, quotable content, which reinforces that primary citation status.
How quickly can a contractor expect to see AI citation results after starting YouTube?
The tracking data does not specify a precise lag time between first video upload and first AI citation, but the general pattern across the 23 businesses that received YouTube citations suggests that consistent posting over two to three months produces a channel large enough to enter AI citation rotation. Single videos on channels with no prior content take longer to gain traction. The practical guidance is to post consistently rather than waiting for one video to perform before posting the next.
Is Reddit safe to use for business promotion without getting banned?
Reddit communities have strict rules against direct self-promotion, and accounts that post primarily promotional content are removed by moderators. The approach that produces AI citation value without rule violations is to answer questions genuinely, without linking to a business website in every response. A contractor can disclose their trade in their username or profile and simply answer questions in their area of expertise. Over time, those answers accumulate into a body of community-recognized content that AI systems draw from when assembling answers to local service questions.
Should I stop using Yelp entirely based on this data?
The citation data argues against paying for Yelp advertising or premium directory placement as an AI visibility strategy, since Yelp appeared in only 2 of 39 citation profiles. Whether to maintain a free Yelp listing is a separate question. A free listing costs nothing to maintain and may still influence consumers who check Yelp directly before calling a contractor. The argument is against paying for enhanced Yelp placement or for Yelp’s ad products when the same budget could fund YouTube content that produced citations in 23 of 39 businesses.
What types of questions make the best YouTube video topics for AI citation?
Questions that customers ask verbally before hiring a contractor perform best, because those questions mirror the natural-language queries that AI systems receive. Examples include “how long does a main line cleaning take,” “what causes sewage backup in a basement,” “how do I know if my water heater needs replacing,” and “what should I expect during a mold inspection.” Each of those questions can become a video title. The contractor films themselves answering the question, states the direct answer in the first 30 seconds, and includes the city name and trade in the title and description.
How does AI triangulate between a website, YouTube, and Reddit?
AI systems are designed to avoid presenting inaccurate information by cross-referencing multiple independent sources. When a contractor’s website states that a service typically takes a certain amount of time and costs within a certain range, and a YouTube video from any creator narrates that same process with similar timeframes, and a Reddit thread in the local city subreddit includes community members confirming similar experiences, those three independent signals reinforce each other. The AI reads that triangulation as confirmation that the information is accurate and quotes from one or more of those sources. Businesses that appear across all three signal types receive more frequent citation than those that appear in only one.
Start Tracking Where Your Business Actually Appears in AI Answers
The data from 39 businesses makes the path forward measurable. Your own website is already the primary AI citation source in your market in nearly every case. The gap to close is in the supporting signals: YouTube videos that narrate your work and answer real customer questions, Reddit participation in your city subreddit and trade communities, and service pages that lead with direct factual answers rather than promotional language. Paid directories returned citation rates below 3% across the entire dataset, while free platforms returned rates above 35% for YouTube alone.
The practical starting point is to identify which domains are currently being cited when someone asks an AI a question in your trade and city. That snapshot tells you exactly where your gaps are. If a competitor’s YouTube channel is appearing in one out of four AI answers in your market, as happened with the drain cleaning client in this dataset, the response is to start posting your own videos, not to wait and see. AI citation share, like organic ranking share, goes to whoever publishes relevant content first and sustains it longest. Begin with one video this week, one Reddit answer this week, and one page on your site restructured to answer the most common question about your primary service. The complete spoken content of the video above, in text.
Hey, I’m Jeremy with Push Leads, helping small businesses get more leads without struggle and frustration.
And what we’re talking about in this video is how important is Yelp and showing up in AI visibility.
The short answer is hardly at all.
So the numbers that nobody’s talking about from actual data that I pulled this morning.
So, of 39 different businesses that we’re working with, of that 23 of 39 businesses we’re working with, 23 of their 39 businesses, YouTube showed up as an AI citation source, which is about 15.5% of all citations.
And what did Yelp get? Two.
And so, like, what’s the point of even doing anything on Yelp, right? If you’re doing anything, you should be on YouTube.
And of course, every SEO guy out there is saying optimize for chat GBT because it has the biggest market share.
But here’s the problem.
No, no one really agrees on what the market share is.
Stack hinder stack hounder says that Gemini has about 9% of the market share.
And then Similar Web says Gemini has and Goody says 10.6%.
And here’s the thing, none of that actually matters to you anyway because nobody is opening up Chad GBT and searching for best drain cleaning near me.
They’re still on Google and they’re still getting an AI answer at the top of Google.
So the real question is which website does Google’s AI actually quote.
So how do we collect this data? It’s not a survey.
It’s not a study.
We’re actually tracking AI citations weekly for every client we work with.
And we’re logging which domains Google’s AI is pulled from when it answers questions in each client space.
So, we tracked 39 contractors, restoration companies, vacation rental companies.
We looked at 166 records, and we looked at 115 distinct domains.
And here’s the breakdown.
When someone does a search in your industry, and the results might surprise you.
Google had 23 of these, Reddit had 14, Yelp had two, and Angie and Thumbtac had one.
Right? So, what does this tell me? This tells me that if you have a service-based business and you want to show up in Google, you should be on YouTube.
I stopped posting on there years ago until about 2 or 3 months ago because I’m like, what’s the point? No one ever looks at these long desktop videos, right? No one even cares.
But actually, Google cares.
Then I can upload videos all day long to YouTube and I’ll start showing up in AI search.
So that’s why this video is on YouTube and of course it’s on LinkedIn.
And here’s the good news that no one expected.
Your website is still number one.
So 38 of 39 businesses were still the single most cited domain in their own space.
AI is not replacing your website the primary source and it stacked YouTube and Reddit underneath it as supporting evidence.
Why? Because AIs are constantly triangulating and they’re trying to make sure that hey when you’re saying something on your website are you saying the same thing on other places? And they don’t they don’t want to lie.
They want to say the truth right.
So here’s a real example.
drain cleaning company.
We work with a plumber.
Their own site has 33% of their citations in their market.
And then YouTube came in at 26%.
This means that in one out of four times Google’s AI answers a drain cleaning question in their city, it’s quoting the YouTube video, not their video, someone else’s video.
And that’s not a threat.
That’s an opening.
I need to get with that client and start making some videos about drain cleaning so they could show up for that.
Right? So that’s all part of it.
This huge shift though is changing everything because basically us SEO people SEO or whatever you want to call this thing.
I like to call it search everywhere optimization.
It’s really about showing up everywhere, not just in one place.
Are you curious about what your customers are actually searching? So if you’re a plumber or a carpet cleaner or vacation.
So I thought this is interesting.
We pulled volume from hrefs and we found out that 3,300 people were searching for remove AI from Google or turn off AI in Google or searches without AI, right? And that was kind of hilarious.
So roughly 10 times more people are trying to turn this AI thing off than actually trying to show up in it, right? Which is kind of like hilarious.
You know, your customers didn’t ask for AI, but it’s happening every anyway.
Your customers didn’t ask for AI search, but it’s here.
the Pandora’s box has been opened.
We can’t shut the box, right? And so by the time your competitors are starting to search for it, the citations are already showing up.
So let’s say that you do care about AI searches cuz they are about 50% of the equation.
AI searches have gone from 5% to 45% in the last year for service-based businesses.
So what should you actually do? You should post a video on YouTube because YouTube is the number one across our entire client base.
You don’t need to be perfect.
Just shoot the job you’re doing and and why.
Answer the question when a customer asks it out loud in the video.
Just do it.
Do do it.
And make sure you have a title and description of the video.
You need to get into Reddit in your market.
You need to answer real questions in your own city subreddit and your trade subreddits.
So 14 of 39 businesses had Reddit attached.
So Reddit is where AI goes to find out what people actually think.
Third, stop overpaying for directories.
Two out of 39 people are on Yelp.
One is on Angie Home Tac, Thumbtac, Home Advisor, BBB.
So look at what you’re spending there and get out of there because that doesn’t help.
And then write your answer.
Your site is already number one in the source.
Protect that.
Put the direct answer when you put the direct answer to any content you’re writing on the page.
AI will quote the answer first in the first 100 words and AI will quote that and you’ll start showing up in AI search.
And these are the types of content that actually gets found by AI search video content.
You could post YouTube videos answering questions, narrating jobs on site, community forums in your local city and trade subreddits.
Um, your own website, you can optimize your page answers, direct responses in the first two sentences, and then you need to, of course, cut category spend Yelp.
I’m kind of convinced that Yelp is probably a scam anyway.
So, I’ve just never really seen it actually work.
So if you keep doing these four actions over and over again, you’ll get more visibility in AI and you’ll start to attract everyone using AI, which is now half the equation.
So the bottom line here is in 39 business with one snapshot, 23 out of 39 businesses were cited from YouTube.
Reddit was about half of those, 14 of those.
Yelp was two of those.
The platforms you’re paying for is not pushing the envelope right now.
You know, Angie, Yelp, what’s the point of that, right? If you want to know exactly where your business shows up for AI right now, drop your city in the trade in the comments and we can do a free snapshot for you and and help you out.
I’m Jeremy Ashurn with Push Leads, helping small businesses get more leads without struggle and frustration.
Talk to you soon.
