Key Takeaways
Google captures 70 to 90 percent of all search engine traffic, so knowing exactly where a website ranks is directly tied to how many phone calls and job requests a contractor receives. The Google Ads Preview and Diagnostics Tool shows anonymous, personalized-search-free rankings for any keyword, one at a time, and is the most reliable free method for checking position without skewed results from logged-in browsing history.
- Google holds 70 to 90 percent of search engine traffic, making rank position a direct revenue lever for local contractors.
- Searching while logged into a Google account produces personalized results that can overstate a site’s true position by several spots.
- The Google Ads Preview and Diagnostics Tool strips out personalization and shows where a site actually appears for any keyword.
- Searching “near me” phrases, such as “plumber near me,” returns more locally accurate results than city-name keywords alone.
- Mobile rankings matter more than desktop because 50 to 70 percent of users search on phones and Google indexes mobile-first.
- A reputable SEO company sends monthly reports showing keyword positions climbing over time, not just traffic estimates.
- Revenue growth should be visible within the first quarter of working with an SEO agency, barring a brand-new website with no history.
Why Google Rank Position Determines How Many Calls a Contractor Gets
Google controls between 70 and 90 percent of all search engine traffic in the United States, and that share climbs even higher in some local markets. For a home-service contractor, a phone number sitting on page two of Google results might as well be unlisted. The higher a business website appears for searches like “HVAC repair Asheville” or “plumber near me,” the more users click, call, and schedule jobs without any paid advertising spend.
The connection between rank position and revenue is not theoretical. An HVAC company operating in South Carolina saw revenue climb from $600,000 to $1,000,000 over a six-week period after an active campaign focused on moving the site into top Google positions. That $400,000 increase happened without changing the company’s service area, pricing, or staff. The only variable was search visibility.
Understanding rank position starts with knowing what a position actually means in practice. Google typically displays ten organic results on page one of any desktop search. Each step down the page reduces click-through rates substantially, with position one capturing anywhere from 25 to 30 percent of clicks and position ten capturing less than 3 percent. For a contractor spending $1,000 to $3,000 per month on SEO, the difference between position five and position one can represent tens of thousands of dollars in annual revenue. Knowing exactly where a site sits, and watching that position move month over month, is the foundation of any informed SEO decision.

How do you check where your website ranks on Google?
The most accurate free method for checking where a website ranks on Google is to use the Google Ads Preview and Diagnostics Tool, sometimes called the Anonymous Ad Preview Tool, which shows search results without the personalization filters that apply when a user is logged into a Google account. To use it, search “ad preview and diagnostics tool” in Google, click the second result, enter a keyword and a location, and the tool returns the actual search results page as Google serves it to a neutral user.
Why does searching Google while logged in give misleading rank data?
About four or five years ago, Google shifted to keeping most users persistently logged in to their Google accounts. When a user is logged in, Google’s algorithm tracks every search, click, and website visit to build a personalization profile. A contractor who visits their own website frequently will see their site ranked higher in their personal search results than it actually ranks for a neutral user. The difference can be dramatic. In a direct comparison between logged-in results and the anonymous preview tool for the same keyword, a site appeared at position one in the logged-in results and at position three in the anonymous results for Maps, and at position seven versus position eight in organic results. Those discrepancies compound when a business owner uses logged-in results to judge whether their SEO investment is working.
What is the Anonymous Ad Preview Tool and how do you find it?
The tool’s official name in Google’s interface is the Ads Preview and Diagnostics Tool, though many practitioners refer to it as the Anonymous Ad Preview Tool. Finding it requires only a quick search for “ad preview and diagnostics tool” in Google. The relevant result is typically the second listing on the page. Once inside the tool, a user types any keyword or search phrase into the search bar, sets a geographic location, and chooses between mobile and desktop view. The tool then renders the full search results page, including ads at the top, the local map pack, and organic results below, exactly as Google delivers them to a non-personalized user in that location.
Should you check rankings on mobile or desktop view?
Mobile view is the more important setting because 50 to 70 percent of all searches happen on mobile devices and Google has operated on a mobile-first indexing model since 2018. This means Google’s algorithm primarily crawls and ranks the mobile version of a website. Desktop results can look cleaner and are easier to scroll through inside the preview tool, but they may not reflect actual ranking positions for the majority of users. Checking both views takes less than two minutes and gives a complete picture of where a site appears across device types.
How to Use the Ad Preview Tool Step by Step
Using the Ad Preview Tool correctly takes under five minutes and produces reliable keyword position data without any account setup or subscription fee. The process starts with identifying one or two keywords that represent the most common searches a potential customer would make to find the business, then running each keyword through the tool with the location set to the city or region the business serves.
What keyword formats produce the most accurate local results?
Phrases that include “near me,” such as “plumber near me” or “dentist near me,” tend to return more locally calibrated results than city-plus-service keywords. When the tool runs a “near me” query with the location set to a specific city, the results mirror what a mobile user in that city would see after opening Google without knowing the business’s name. Searching “plumber near me” in the Asheville, North Carolina location setting, for example, surfaces the map pack first, followed by paid ads, and then organic listings from local plumbing companies. That result set is far more representative of competitive landscape than a broad keyword like “plumbing services” with no location modifier.
How many keywords should you check at once?
The Ad Preview Tool checks one keyword at a time, which makes it practical for spot-checking five to ten priority terms but not suitable for tracking a full keyword list of 50 or more phrases weekly. Contractors who want to understand the broader scope of how many keywords to target and how to group them by priority can review research on how many keywords to focus on when doing SEO, which covers keyword volume thresholds and grouping strategies. For daily monitoring at scale, dedicated rank-tracking platforms automate the process across hundreds of keywords simultaneously.
What positions on the results page actually matter?
The results page has three sections that generate the majority of clicks for local searches. First are paid ads at the very top, which are labeled with a small “Sponsored” tag. Second is the local map pack, which typically shows three business listings with star ratings, phone numbers, and directions links. Third is the organic section below the map pack, which runs from position one to ten on page one. For most home-service keywords, being in the map pack generates the highest click volume because it appears above organic results and includes phone numbers that users can tap directly from the results page.
Why Logged-In Google Searches Skew the Numbers
A contractor checking their own rankings by typing a keyword into Google while logged into their account is almost certainly seeing inflated positions. Google’s personalization engine weighs the user’s history of visiting a specific site, clicking on its content, and spending time on its pages. A business owner who visits their own website dozens of times per month signals to Google that this site is highly relevant to that specific user, so Google surfaces it higher for that user than it would for a first-time searcher with no prior interaction.
How much can personalization affect rank position?
The gap between personalized results and actual results varies by keyword competitiveness and how often the site owner visits their own pages. In testing, differences of two to five positions in organic results and one to two positions in the map pack are common. For competitive keywords where every position represents a meaningful shift in traffic, a five-position overstatement can lead a business owner to believe their site is on page one when it is actually on page two. Decisions made on that false assumption, such as reducing SEO budget or stopping link-building efforts, can cause real ranking losses.
Is incognito mode a reliable alternative to the Ad Preview Tool?
Incognito mode in Chrome or a private browsing window in Firefox removes cookies and local browsing history from the session, which eliminates some personalization signals. Searching on a mobile phone with Wi-Fi turned off and using a Chrome incognito tab is a reasonable approximation of neutral results for a quick check. However, Google still uses IP address location and other session-level signals even in incognito mode, so incognito results are closer to neutral than logged-in results but not as clean as the Ad Preview Tool. For consistent, repeatable data, the Ad Preview Tool is the more reliable choice.
Does device type affect how much personalization influences results?
Yes. Desktop results pulled from a logged-in account tend to show heavier personalization because desktop sessions are more often tied to a persistent Google account with years of browsing data. Mobile searches on 4G, without Wi-Fi, on an incognito tab, carry fewer historical signals and produce results closer to what a new customer would see. Neither method fully replicates an anonymous search, but combining mobile incognito browsing with periodic checks through the Ad Preview Tool gives a contractor a practical and low-cost monitoring routine.
Interpreting What the Results Page Actually Shows
Reading a results page from the Ad Preview Tool requires understanding the layout order and what each section means for a local contractor. The page typically starts with paid ads at the top, moves into the local map pack showing three businesses, and then continues with the organic ten-pack. Some searches for highly competitive terms show ads above the map pack, ads within the map pack in some markets, and ads again at the bottom of the organic results.
What does it mean to rank in the map pack versus organic results?

The map pack and the organic results are separate ranking systems. A site can rank in position one of the organic results while not appearing in the map pack at all, or it can hold a map pack position while sitting on page three of organic results. Map pack rankings are driven primarily by the Google Business Profile, proximity to the searcher, and reviews, while organic rankings are driven by website authority, content relevance, and backlinks. A well-rounded local SEO strategy addresses both systems. Resources such as guidance on high-quality guest posting websites explain how link acquisition contributes to organic authority, which over time can lift both organic and map pack positions.
How do ads affect the interpretation of organic rank?
Ads sit at the top of the page and push organic results and the map pack further down the screen, particularly on mobile. On a competitive search like “HVAC repair near me,” there may be two to four ads above the map pack, which means even a position-one organic result appears below the fold on a mobile screen. This context matters when evaluating rank data because a position-five organic result on a page with four ads at the top is effectively position nine in terms of screen real estate. Understanding ad density for each target keyword helps set realistic expectations for organic traffic from any given ranking position.
What counts as a strong position for a local contractor?
For map pack visibility, appearing in the top three is the standard threshold because Google shows only three map pack listings in most results. For organic results, positions one through three on page one capture the majority of clicks, with the click-through rate dropping significantly at position four and below. Positions six through ten on page one still generate traffic and have value, but positions eleven and beyond, which place a site on page two or lower, generate negligible organic traffic for most keyword volumes. A contractor moving from position 20 to position 7 has made a meaningful improvement even if they are not yet in the top three.
Moving From a One-Time Check to Ongoing Rank Tracking
Checking one keyword in the Ad Preview Tool on a single day gives a snapshot, not a trend. Rankings fluctuate daily due to algorithm updates, competitor activity, new content published by competitors, and seasonal changes in search behavior. A single data point cannot show whether a site is climbing, holding steady, or losing ground. Consistent tracking over time, using the same keywords checked at the same frequency, is what reveals whether an SEO investment is producing results.
How often should a contractor check keyword rankings?
For contractors managing their own SEO without a dedicated agency, checking five to ten core keywords weekly through the Ad Preview Tool is a practical minimum. Monthly checks are better than nothing but may miss short-term ranking drops caused by a competitor publishing new content or a local algorithm update. Daily checks for every keyword are impractical manually but are standard practice for SEO platforms that automate the process. The goal is to identify patterns over 30, 60, and 90-day periods rather than reacting to single-day fluctuations, which are normal and not necessarily indicative of a larger trend.
What should monthly SEO reports from an agency include?
A contractor paying $1,000 to $3,000 per month for SEO services should receive a monthly report that shows specific keyword positions at the start and end of each reporting period, the direction of movement for each keyword, total number of keywords in the top ten and top three, and any new keywords that entered the tracked set. Reports that show only traffic estimates or session counts without ranking data are insufficient because traffic can fluctuate for reasons unrelated to ranking position. Contractors can also use SEO dashboard tools to consolidate ranking data, traffic metrics, and conversion data into a single view, making it easier to correlate position changes with lead volume changes.
How long should it take to see rankings improve after starting SEO?
For a site with an existing history, meaning it has been live for more than six months and has some backlinks and content indexed, ranking improvements for lower-competition keywords often appear within 60 to 90 days of consistent SEO work. Highly competitive keywords in major metro areas may take six to twelve months to move into page-one positions. For a brand-new website with no domain history, the timeline extends further because Google takes time to establish trust in new domains. A contractor who has had an SEO company working on their site for more than one quarter without any measurable position changes on tracked keywords has cause to request an explanation or reevaluate the engagement.
Connecting Rank Position to Revenue Outcomes
Ranking position matters only insofar as it produces phone calls, form submissions, and booked jobs. A contractor who ranks in position one for a keyword with very low search volume may see little revenue impact, while a contractor who moves from position eight to position three for a high-volume local keyword may see a significant revenue increase. Understanding the relationship between position, click volume, and conversion requires tracking both sides of the equation.
How do you know if better rankings are generating more revenue?
Revenue attribution for organic search requires connecting Google Business Profile call tracking, website contact form submissions, and booking system data to specific traffic sources. Most contractors start by watching for month-over-month increases in inbound calls and form fills during the same period that rankings are climbing. The six-week case in which an HVAC company grew from $600,000 to $1,000,000 in revenue is an example of what concentrated movement on a set of high-intent keywords can produce when the site is already positioned to convert visitors. Tracking revenue alongside ranking position in the same monthly report closes the loop between SEO activity and business outcome.
What is a realistic revenue improvement timeline after SEO begins?
For contractors who already have an established website, some domain authority, and a complete Google Business Profile, the first measurable revenue impact from SEO typically appears within 90 days. The first quarter tends to show early movement on lower-competition keywords, which drives incremental call volume. By months four through six, if the strategy is executed consistently, primary service keywords should be climbing into positions that generate meaningful call increases. Contractors who reach month four with no revenue change and no keyword movement should request a detailed keyword position report before committing to another quarter of spend.
How does the number of top-ten keywords relate to revenue growth?
Revenue scales more predictably as the total number of keywords ranking in the top ten increases, rather than relying on a single keyword. A contractor with five keywords in positions one through three has a more stable and scalable traffic base than one with a single keyword at position one and nothing else in the top twenty. As an SEO campaign matures, a well-managed strategy expands the keyword footprint so that a site ranking for 5 terms in the top positions grows to 10, then 15, then 20 or more. Each additional keyword in the top three represents another entry point for a potential customer who is ready to call.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Google Ads Preview and Diagnostics Tool?
The Google Ads Preview and Diagnostics Tool is a free interface inside Google Ads that lets any user preview a search results page for a specific keyword and location without triggering personalization based on account history. It shows ads, the local map pack, and organic results as they appear to a neutral user. To find it, search “ad preview and diagnostics tool” in Google and click the second result. No Google Ads account or budget is required to use the preview feature for rank checking.
Why does my website look higher in Google when I search it myself?
Google tracks browsing history and previous site visits when a user is logged into their Google account, which it uses to personalize search results. A business owner who visits their own website regularly sends signals to Google that this site is highly relevant to them personally. As a result, the site appears higher in their personal search results than it does for a neutral user with no interaction history. The gap between personalized results and actual rankings can be two to five positions or more, depending on keyword competitiveness and visit frequency.
Is incognito mode accurate enough to check rankings?
Incognito mode removes cookies and local browsing data from a session, which eliminates some personalization, but Google still uses IP address location and other session signals even in private browsing. Results in incognito mode are closer to neutral than logged-in results but are not as reliable as the Ad Preview Tool for consistent rank checking. For a quick approximation, using a mobile phone on 4G with Wi-Fi off and an incognito Chrome tab produces reasonably accurate results. For formal reporting, the Ad Preview Tool is the preferred method.
How often do Google rankings change?
Google updates its ranking algorithm hundreds of times per year, ranging from minor daily adjustments to major named updates that roll out over weeks. A site’s ranking for any given keyword can shift by one to three positions on any given day due to these updates, competitor content changes, or new backlinks earned or lost. These short-term fluctuations are normal and do not indicate a fundamental problem. The meaningful metric is the 30 to 90-day trend across a tracked keyword set, not single-day position changes.
What keywords should a home-service contractor track?
A contractor should track keywords that match the services they offer and the geographic area they serve. Starting with five to ten primary service-plus-location phrases, such as “HVAC repair Asheville” or “plumber near me,” gives a manageable baseline. Adding “near me” variants tends to surface more locally accurate results in the Ad Preview Tool than city-only modifiers. Over time, the tracked list expands to include secondary services, neighborhood-level keywords, and long-tail questions that potential customers search before calling. Tracking too many keywords at once without prioritization dilutes focus.
What should I see in a monthly SEO report from my agency?
A monthly SEO report should show the starting and ending positions for each tracked keyword, a clear directional trend for each term, the total number of keywords in positions one through three and one through ten, and any newly ranked keywords added during the period. Reports that show only website traffic, session counts, or impressions without corresponding position data do not provide enough information to evaluate whether the strategy is working. Revenue or lead volume data alongside ranking data gives the most complete picture of return on investment.
How long before SEO produces measurable results for a contractor?
For a contractor with an established website and existing Google Business Profile, lower-competition keywords often show movement within 60 to 90 days. Primary high-competition keywords in competitive markets can take six to twelve months to reach page-one positions. A brand-new website with no domain history typically takes longer because Google evaluates trust signals built over time. A contractor who has worked with an SEO company for a full quarter without any measurable keyword position movement should request a detailed explanation before committing additional budget.
Does ranking higher in organic results also improve map pack visibility?
Organic rankings and map pack rankings are separate systems driven by different factors. Organic position depends primarily on website content, backlink authority, and technical SEO. Map pack position depends on Google Business Profile completeness, proximity to the searcher, and review volume and quality. Improvements to organic ranking do not automatically improve map pack position, and vice versa. However, a comprehensive local SEO strategy that addresses both the website and the Google Business Profile tends to produce gains in both areas over a period of three to six months of consistent work.
Check Your Real Rankings Today and Start Making Data-Driven SEO Decisions
A contractor who has never used the Google Ads Preview and Diagnostics Tool is making SEO decisions based on inaccurate data. The five minutes it takes to search “ad preview and diagnostics tool,” open the result, type in a primary service keyword, set the location to the service area, and switch to mobile view will immediately show where the business actually stands compared to competitors. That single data point, combined with a commitment to checking the same five to ten keywords monthly, creates the foundation for every subsequent SEO decision.
If those keyword positions are not moving upward over a 90-day period, the strategy needs adjustment. If revenue is not responding to position improvements, conversion factors on the site or the Google Business Profile need attention. Both problems are solvable with consistent tracking and the willingness to act on what the data shows.

I’m so if you are curious about your website and you know you have a website you have a local business you’re probably really curious about where your showing up in Google and so the specific question is where does my website show up in Google right people ask that question all the time and the reason why people ask this question it’s pretty obvious but you know Google is 7080 percent sometimes 90% of all the search engine traffic out there so your website your business website them higher it shows up in Google the more people find you and then they contact you they walk into your business they call you we’ve been working with an HVAC company in South Carolina and you know their their revenue has gone from six hundred thousand to 1 million in six weeks so and that’s just because we’re working on getting you know them to the top of Google and we’re actively working on it so anyway let me share my screen and the question then is how you know where do I find up in Google where do I fought where does my website rank in Google so you can google that right where does my website rank on Google and you can get responses and there’s all these tools that will do the rankings and check your rankings but I’m gonna keep it simple and just gonna show you about one simple tool that I tell my clients all it’s about all the time and it’s from Google and it gives you exactly where your website ranks so the easiest way to find this tool is just to put in the ad preview and diagnostics tool and what this tool does is essentially show you where your website ranks in Google and so you just put that into Google and click on the second response or a second result it’s called the anonymous ad preview tool really complicated name for a simple tool okay so I’m based out of Asheville North Carolina and I’m just going to put Asheville SEO okay right so that’s one of the people one of the searches that people put in their Asheville SEO and what it does is it tells me Asheville SEO in the location of Asheville actually here’s the mobile response right here so I could see you know Asheville Co Asheville SEO I can see Maps responses Maps results here I can see white fox there you know one of my competitors and then I can see result results in here I think I’m number four and let’s see you know I guess one two three four five I’m number five and push leads here right so I need to move that up and we are in that process of moving that up but that’s exactly where I show for this term so this is one result here right if I wanted to put just SEO services and let’s see SEO services then I have ads at the top all right so a lot of times it’ll show you ads then I have maps so I’m shown two maps for this one on number three in maps one two three and then let’s see I’m probably somewhere on this page I’m not sure exactly yeah I guess I’m about halfway down so typically speaking there’s about ten positions on a page and so this is how you find where you are now I prefer to keep it on mobile even though it’s a little harder to look at and you got to scroll down where it says device here you can click on desktop and you could look at a desktop results as well a little easier to see it there however though about at least fifty to seventy percent of us are on the mobile all the time and Google really looks at mobile first so it’s really important to kind of look more to really just sort of pretend so to speak you’re on a mobile phone or you know just be on a mobile phone there you know click on the mobile device and you know have that going now you can also go to Google and just put in like if I just put in Asheville SEO right now a lot of times we do this without a tool so the problem with just doing this okay is that if you look here in the right-hand corner I’m logged in to my Google account and about four or five years ago Google made it to where basically you’re always logged in to your Google account right and it will ask you to a lot of times just sign-in even if you aren’t so what this means is that Google is tracking exactly what I’m doing all the time which I don’t really care about that and most people don’t care you know I’m not one of those people that freaks out about privacy so I’m gonna put SEO services however though here’s the thing because Google’s tracking they are serving you what’s called personalized results so that basically means that the actual search it’s a little can be a little different or a lot of different or a lot different when you put in just in regular Google versus using this tool okay so if I put in SEO services here ain’t honest see on number three and I’m seeing you know one two three let’s see four five six seven I’m seven here in the actual real search now I’m seeing my ad here but and it looks see I’m at the top and maps here whereas here I was number three right so you can see a discrepancy right there right away I’m number one versus number three so if you’re just looking at your rankings in Google and not using the ad preview tool the anonymous ad preview tool what a mouthful if you’re not if you’re just looking at this then you’re drinking the kool-aid okay so right away there’s a difference here and then let’s see here I was number seven one two three four five so it looks like I’m number eight in the actual search right so anyway all that to say it’s really important that you use the ad preview and diagnostics tool so just once again just show you how to do it just go to this tool put a keyword in here you can put any keyword that or search phrase that you think is important and we can talk later about how to find better search phrases but just put in something that you think so if your plumbing company you could put plumbing you know if your dentist put dentist office a lot of times putting near mean will give you actually better results than just you know SEO or plumbing so if I put plumber near me alright so I see all about plumbing blue planet and I see ads and then I see Cooper’s King and Spartan plumbing in Asheville and it looks like roto-rooter is the first real one right so putting near me dentist’s office near me plumber near me a much better result there anyway so use this tool now if you want to and you don’t want to use this tool but you want you’re on the go and you want to just approximate what you can do is you can actually go to pull out your phone and go to Google and turn off your Wi-Fi okay that means they’re on 4G generally speaking and then you can do a search there in Chrome on incognito right so on your mobile phone on a desktop you go to Chrome and you go to you go to Chrome here and you go to incognito browser right so and so that is gonna be a kind of a better sense on your phone though it’s gonna be you’re gonna open an incognito browser or it’s gonna be a private browser in Firefox you just hit the tab button and you open it up I’m not gonna try to show you that because I’m on a desktop anyway but so that is a better way to approximate it now you know so what so what I would suggest you do is always use this ad preview Diagnostics tool this will just tell you one keyword at a time where you are like right now and the rankings will change the rankings will go up and down every time and that kind of thing now when you hire an SEO company such as push leads or any other company out there they’re gonna be doing all this tracking for you and they’re gonna give reports of it you’ll know exactly where you are in Google you’ll know how thing you’ll know you should see them moving up so one of the ways to know you’re working with a strong SEO company you know for your business is they’re sending you reports and those reports show you that you’re moving up higher and higher in Google for more keywords right so if you have like five cubes at the top of Google then now you have ten now you have fifteen now you have twenty so you should be able to see those keywords moving up you should see them hey they went from five to one or they went from ten to one or they went from position 20 you know page 3 to in the middle of Google’s first page so you should see those going up now the other thing you should see going up is also your revenue right so if you’re spending five hundred thousand or two thousand dollars a month or more especially if you’re spending one two or three thousand dollars a month that’s a lot of money for SEO you should really see your bottom line moving up I was talking to a potential client yesterday and they were like look they switched to a new SEO company but I don’t really see my bottom line moving up and it should really be happening in the first quarter of working with them then unless you have a brand new website you should start seeing the bottom line move up you start search you should start seeing your revenue moving up all right well I hope that’s really been beneficial and if you have any questions just you know just reach out to me Thanks thanks for chatting with me Jeff hope hopefully you know you have at you I hope you have a great day I’m trying to talk and look at attack messages at the same time yeah man get to your website and do your work but if you have any other questions reach out to me and just do it leave a comment or ask me a question and I’ll respond to it and thanks a lot
