Google has unveiled a new search feature, initially available in India, which allows users to search within YouTube videos. This innovative technology provides users with a more comprehensive and convenient search experience, allowing them to find the data they need more quickly and effortlessly.
Google is introducing innovative search capabilities to India, one of its key markets, including the ability to search within videos and display bilingual search results. At its recent Google For India event, the company also announced the availability of bilingual voice search, natural language search within Google Pay, and handwriting-to-text translation via Google Lens. These updates demonstrate Google’s commitment to improving the search experience for users in India.
These features will likely be introduced in North America in the future. In the meantime, here is additional information about the search capabilities being launched in India.
Search Within Videos
Google is introducing a feature that allows users to search within YouTube videos. While watching a video on YouTube, users can tap on the “Search in video” option and enter a specific topic they wish to find within the video. This feature makes it easier to locate and skip specific information within a video.
In a blog post, Google says:
“Videos are a valuable source of visual information, but it can be challenging to locate specific information within a long clip. The new “Search in video” feature allows users to search for specific terms mentioned within a video, making it easier to find relevant information. For example, if you are watching a video about Agra and want to know if it also mentions Fatehpur Sikri, you can use the “Search in the video” feature to quickly find the answer. This feature is currently being piloted.”
Bilingual Search Results
Google is enhancing its search capabilities in India by providing bilingual search results. In addition to displaying results in English, the search engine will also show results in the user’s preferred language, making it easier for non-native English speakers to find relevant information. This update demonstrates Google’s commitment to improving the search experience for users in India.
According to a Google blog post:
“In India, the language needs of users are becoming increasingly diverse and multilingual, which is reflected in their search experiences. The majority of Google users in India use more than one language. To make it easier for these users to search for and access information, we are now providing bilingual search results pages for those who prefer it. This will allow users to explore information in their preferred language more easily.”
This functionality is moving out in Hindi and will expand to other Indian languages, including Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, and Bengali, in the coming year.
Bilingual Voice Search
To better serve Hinglish speakers, those who use a combination of Hindi and English, Google is improving its speech recognition technology. This allows users in India to conduct a voice search using both Hindi and English in the same query, and the search engine can accurately understand and provide results for the user’s search.
According to a Google blog post:
“Our goal is to help more people, particularly those in India, to ask questions and interact with our services using their natural voice. To that end, we are introducing a new speech recognition model better equipped to understand those who speak in Hinglish. This model uses a neural network approach that considers the speaker’s accent, the surrounding environment, context, and speaking style. By doing so, we aim to make it easier for people to use our voice-based services more intuitively and naturally.”
Natural Language Search In Google Pay
Google is introducing a new feature in India that allows users to search within Google Pay using natural language phrases. This feature allows users to find specific transactions and other information within Google Pay. With this update, users can now ask Google Pay questions such as “Show me how much I spent on coffee last week” and receive relevant results.
Handwriting To Text Translation
Google is developing a feature for Google Lens that translates doctors’ handwriting into easily readable text. While no launch date has been announced for this feature, it is explicitly intended for use by medical professionals. The development of this technology may have potential applications in other areas in the future.
